Why You Need an Updated headshot

Authenticity matters today.  If your Headshots and Branding Photos look completely different than who shows up to a meeting with clients in person–your credibility goes out the window.  If you are using the same AI background as competitors or using old photos, what impression are you making?  I would hazard to guess not the impression you want to be making.

I know that is slightly cringey.  I get it.  But understand this: Your Headshot and Branding Photos are often the very first introduction prospective clients will have of you and your business.  They are your digital handshake or calling card.

What is an overly optimized AI or Stock photo saying about you, your business, and the confidence you have (or don’t have) in what you bring to the table?  Do your outdated images reflect an outdated business persona?  Can clients trust you when you use fake or outdated photos?  Do they signal that you don’t take yourself or your brand seriously enough to invest money in a pro photo shoot?  Do your images look exactly the same as every other business or candidate out in the marketplace?  These are all very real concerns to consider.

Now that I have said the uncomfortable part out loud…

What are the reasons you haven’t updated your headshot?

1. “I love my photo from 10 years ago.” Or “I don’t look any different.”  Sometimes the changes in your appearance are gradual.  You might think you look exactly the same as ten years ago. Gently I will tell you–chances are you do not.
2. “I need to wait until I look better.” That is so common, but we really need to stop using that as an excuse.  We all have things we don’t love about our appearance, but beauty is in imperfections.  This excuse can cause literal years of procrastination.
3. “I am way too busy.” Life can be crazy.  Work, family, and social commitments can be all consuming.  I understand this.  However, FACT: You need to make time to update your business photos or you could be passed over for consideration.
4. Some clients have had awful experiences in the past. If someone has previously felt awkward, overly posed, rushed, or unhappy with the results, they’re understandably hesitant to try again.  The good thing is the standard for commercial Headshots has greatly evolved.  You might be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.
5. They think professional photos are “only” for certain professions. This could not be further from the truth.  With the rise of social media, everyone can use at least one great Headshot.
6. Lastly, a new Headshot or Branding photos can feel like you are acknowledging you have changed. Change sometimes frightens people, especially when it involves our self-perception.  A new photo isn’t just replacing an older, dated image. A new Headshot can denote a new job, a promotion, a career change, etc. These are all positive and exciting things.  Let’s make photos that promote who you are right now.
