Behind the Scenes Content Creation

Behind the Scenes Content Creation

Lately it is becoming more important than ever to create Behind the Scenes Content for our businesses and marketing to build trust and convey authenticity.  But what does this really mean for an individual businessperson?  And does that apply across the board to everyone?

Behind the Scenes Content Photos

This photo of my client Karen holding her cup was created on her porch with the books she has written and holding her coffee cup. Photos like these can add detail or context on a website or social media.

What IS ‘Behind The Scenes’ Content Creation?

First things first:  When I think about “Behind the Scenes,” it means what happens during a normal day or process that the average client might have no idea about.  It is quietly going on in the background on the daily and is not what the customer usually sees.

The goal hopefully is that by showing people what is quietly going on that the viewer will not only see a new perspective but can vicariously experience the people and processes that go on and it will help to better connect with them or they will become more appreciative of the process.

Are Viewers Really All That Interested In Behind The Scenes Content?

This is the million dollar question.

Think about yourself.  When you are scrolling through social media, do you watch Behind the Scenes Content videos or look at photos that do the same?  I confess, one of my guilty pleasures is watching this random guy Donnie behind the scenes in Indonesia grooming pedigreed cats.  And—I don’t even own a cat.  I find it very interesting, although I could not tell you why.  He seems very skilled at what he does.  He is personable and funny and seems to enjoy his job.  And let me tell you, if I did in fact own a cat, I would hire him!  He seems authentic and relatable.

One of the things I have struggled with in the past as a business owner is that I don’t see my day-to-day process as all that interesting.  I do it every day so I think it can be a little boring.  Also, as a photographer, I feel the need to present a polished and professional image.  Therefore, I was surprised to see some of my behind-the-scenes content do well in the algorithm.  It just goes to show you that you may find something you do ho hum, but others might think it is interesting.

What Is the Goal of Behind the Scenes Content Creation?

What can your branding photos tell viewers? You can start with how you work and where you work!

I think that the real aim of BTS content is to create something that will intrigue or captivate the audience.  You want to engage them and get them to follow your account.  Ultimately you want to convert them into paying customers.

What BTS Content Will Drive Conversions?

There is no generic one size fits all template for Behind The Scenes Content that will engage individual audiences.  It will completely depend on what type of business or audience we are talking about.  You can do trial and error with your social platforms to see which types on content get the most engagement.  But you should certainly be asking actual customers how they found you and what factors led them to choose you.

An Influencer or solopreneur might think their audience resonates with A GRWM (get ready with me) or DITL (day in the life/follow me around) video.  They’re pretty harmless, but I am not sure that they do a lot to convince your customers to buy from you.   And GRWN certainly would not be appropriate for an Accountant or Lawyer.  It is one of those things where people might watch them for fun, but will not necessarily convert to sales.

However, Behind the Scenes Content photos and/or video introducing your team, perhaps showing them doing part of their job in relation to what the customer will receive, can help break down barriers, start the relationship-building process and show how products or services are delivered before the sale. That can be very useful.

Demonstrating how something is made can visually answer questions a customer might have.  But what other options are there?

Telling a story about a conference or seminar you are attending can show that you invest in your own growth for the benefit of your clients. Perhaps if you are speaking there, you can highlight your industry expertise.   Receiving an industry award?  Content Gold–Who doesn’t want to work with successful people? On the flip side–Filming your team slowly getting wasted at the Annual Christmas Party will not have the same effect—and maybe have the opposite.

Even products can tell a story.  This T-shirt is important because the graphic celebrates the number of years the Alpine Sport Shop has been operational.

Choose The Moments And Plan For The Frequency

There is a plethora of content out there and it can seem intimidating.  However, instead of trying to post the most content you can, why not focus on the quality of what you are posting?

In 2026, maybe you can post less.  Instead make it compelling to your audience. Think long and hard about whether they will benefit from it.  Like all content, make sure it has a purpose.  Don’t feel compelled to have content for every little thing you do – although you could always capture a ton and not publish all of it.

Behind The Scenes content does have value if you are careful and deliberate in the way you use it.

Note: Do not be tempted to copy someone else’s content ideas and style just because you like to see it or because they seem to get tons of engagement.  You are not them!  Authenticity matters.
